Suspect Arrested in Connection with Death of UBC Journalist at Jasmine Concert

Police in Kampala are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a journalist affiliated with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation(UBC).

Aine Bonnas, the deceased, sustained fatal injuries while covering a musical concert at Hotel Africana on Friday.

The concert, headlined by local musician Lydia Jasmine and dubbed the ‘First Born’, drew a large crowd of revelers. Unfortunately, the event took a chaotic turn, leading to a stampede of unclear origin.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Deputy Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Bonnas suffered severe head injuries from a blunt object during the stampede. Despite being rushed to Mulago Hospital by good Samaritans, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

“He fell down unconscious and was later on rushed to Mulago Hospital by colleagues, but it was later on announced that he succumbed to the injuries on his head,” says Owoyesigyire

Owoyesigyire stated during a press briefing on Monday that one suspect, identified as Kimera Sharif, was apprehended during an operation on the same evening. Eyewitnesses accused Kimera of instigating the incident that resulted in Aine’s death.

Furthermore, Owoyesigyire reported that Kimera exhibited violent behavior, assaulting a fellow detainee and three others while in police custody at Jinja Road Police Station, where he is currently held. Kimera faces charges of murder in connection with Aine’s death, as well as assault, and is awaiting a court appearance.

Owoyesigyire emphasized that the police are diligently investigating the incident, considering various eyewitness accounts. Some witnesses claim Aine was attacked by a woman, while others allege involvement of unidentified assailants. The conflicting testimonies will be thoroughly examined as part of the investigation process.
