Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest bank by assets, is making significant strategic leadership changes, with two prominent Ugandan executives, Patrick Mweheire and Francis Karuhanga, taking on elevated roles. These appointments highlight the Group’s confidence in Ugandan talent and its deliberate strategy to nurture homegrown leaders for key Pan-African positions.

Patrick Mweheire: A Legacy of Transformation in East Africa

After a highly successful five-year tenure as the Regional Chief Executive (RCE) for East Africa,  Mweheire will conclude his term at the end of August 2025. During his leadership, the East Africa portfolio, which includes Stanbic’s operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, rose to become the second most profitable region within the Standard Bank Group.

Mweheire’s strategic focus on organic growth, cross-border collaboration, and dedicated service to multinational clients was instrumental in this achievement. Before his regional appointment in 2020, Mweheire served as the Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Uganda from 2015 to 2020.

It was in this role that he orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, propelling the bank to market leadership and achieving record-breaking profitability.

A Harvard MBA graduate and a veteran investment banker, Mweheire brought a unique blend of global expertise and a deep commitment to African ambition to his leadership style. While stepping down from his RCE role, he will remain a Senior Executive within the Group and continue to serve as Chief Executive of Stanbic Kenya Holdings, where his experience will continue to be a valuable asset.

Francis Karuhanga: A New Chapter in Southern and Central Africa

Karuhanga, the current Chief Executive of Stanbic Uganda Holdings Limited, has been appointed as the new Regional Chief Executive for South and Central Africa.

This appointment, effective September 1, 2025, is a powerful testament to the Group’s recognition of his deep institutional knowledge and proven leadership. Karuhanga’s rise to this top position comes barely two years after he took over the leadership of Stanbic Uganda Holdings in January 2024.

With over two decades of experience in the banking and financial services sectors, Karuhanga is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (FCCA UK). His career within the Standard Bank Group has been marked by a strong track record of success, including a distinguished tenure as the Group Chief Audit Officer.

In this role, he demonstrated strategic foresight and a strong ethical compass, qualities that the Group is confident will drive continued growth in the South and Central Africa region. Karuhanga will continue to lead Stanbic Uganda Holdings during a transition period.

Uganda’s Growing Contribution to Pan-African Leadership

These high-level transitions are a proud moment for Uganda, showcasing its growing stature as a hub for developing top-tier financial talent. Both Mweheire and Karuhanga exemplify the calibre of professionals being cultivated within Uganda and entrusted with leading multi-market portfolios for the continent’s largest banking group.

Their achievements not only highlight Uganda’s significant contribution to the African financial services landscape but also underscore Standard Bank Group’s deliberate and successful investment in nurturing African talent.
