Ssenyonyi Pledges to Build on Predecessor’s Foundation

Joel Ssenyonyi, the new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, is optimistic about building on the foundation set by his predecessor, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba.

Appointed by the National Unity Platform (NUP) in December 2023, Ssenyonyi expressed hope for a peaceful transition during the handover ceremony at Parliament.

Mpuuga officially handed over the office after a 30-month tenure, concluding in May 2021. Ssenyonyi sees this change as a rare and peaceful event for Ugandans to witness. He encourages such peaceful transitions across all positions of authority in the country.

Being the 10th Leader of the Opposition since Uganda gained independence in 1962, Ssenyonyi intends to build on Mpuuga’s foundation for socio-economic changes and improved service delivery. He acknowledges the challenges faced by Ugandans and aims to address them through his leadership.

Mpuuga, now appointed Commissioner of Parliament, commended the peaceful transfer of power and urged Ssenyonyi to continue advocating for a better and united Uganda. He emphasized the growing hope in the opposition, as evidenced by the positive attention and criticism of their efforts for change.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of their roles in keeping the government in check, with Ssenyonyi taking on the responsibility to lead the opposition in Parliament.

Speaker Anita Among congratulated Ssenyonyi during a parliamentary session, acknowledging his former role as the Chairperson of Commissions, Statutory Authority, and State Enterprises (COSASE).

The appointment of Mpuuga as Commissioner of Parliament and Francis Zaake as Deputy Opposition Chief Whip and Shadow Minister for Presidency was also noted.
