Speeding Blamed for Deadly Jinja-Kampala Highway Accident

A tragic accident on Wednesday evening along the Jinja-Kampala highway has claimed two lives and left several others injured.

The incident occurred at Kaganda in Njeru municipality, with a loaded box body truck bearing registration number UBH 059F reportedly colliding with commuter vehicles, resulting in numerous casualties.

According to reports, one person died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries during treatment at Jinja hospital. The Red Cross in Jinja mobilized emergency response efforts, utilizing ambulances and support from private individuals to rescue the injured. Thankfully, all 26 casualties triaged at Jinja hospital and St. Francis healthcare services are now out of danger and showing signs of progressive recovery.

The Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, Hellen Butoto, attributes the accident to speeding. She explains that the collision occurred as two commuter vehicles attempted to overtake a struggling truck in a narrow section of the highway near a valley. Butoto emphasizes that their traffic teams are actively working to identify the deceased and notify their relatives for ongoing support during the healing process.
