Joint Security Forces have intensified security both at Parliament and the residence of the Speaker Anita Among amidst death threat reports.
The Speaker of Parliament stated during plenary on Thursday that a group of unknown suspected assassins have been trailing her car.
“I have got a report and I have only shared this with the Leader of Opposition [Mr Mathias Mpuuga] and now I can officially tell you [MPs in plenary]. I have got an assassination report wanting to assassinate me,” she said on Thursday
While addressing the media on Monday, Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Force-UPF spokesperson said , considering the status of the Speaker security has since been deployed. Enanga says parliamentary police have been alerted as well as Counter-terrorism.
“Our team from Counter-terrorism continues to monitor the security detail of the speaker, and make sure that all-around protection by bodyguards stays vigilant at all levels of her movement and at her residence,” Enanga stated.
Joint security forces including the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, Internal Security Organization, and Crime Intelligence have also started investigating the death reports.
“The position of Speaker of Parliament is a very important one that should have consequences to the country and parliamentarians. so our CID experts are investigating the extent of the threats, but we shall not elaborate when and who made the threats,” Enanga said.
The assassination threats against the speaker follow the disappearance of his bodyguard, Aggrey Aruho who allegedly hoodwinked parliament that he was flying to the US for the 34th Uganda North America Association-UNAA-convention earlier this month only to disappear.
