The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anita Among has extended an invitation to his holiness Pope Francis to visit Uganda in the near future.
She made the polite request on August 24, 2024, during a private audience in the Vatican. The Speaker was in the company of her husband Hon. Moses Magogo and the couple’s twins.
During the roughly 30-minute private audience, Speaker Among conveyed greetings from President Museveni, Parliament, and the people of Uganda, before extending an invitation to Pope Francis to visit Uganda once more.
“I want to thank you and the Church for always praying for us and warmly invite you to visit Uganda again.” she said
Pope Francis hailed Uganda for kind people, and deep spiritual principles that have supported the country’s national unity.
He spoke of passed laws and policies that offer sanctuary to those seeking it and the country’s welcoming response to migrants and refugees from many nations.
Pope Francis also extended his regards to President Yoweri Museveni through Speaker Anita Among, commending his efforts in promoting peace and stability in Uganda. The Pope assured her of his continued prayers for the nation.
During the same visit, Speaker Among also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, to discuss enhancing Uganda-Vatican relations.
This marks her fifth private audience with the Pope.
The Pope was last in Uganda from November 27 to 29, 2015. This followed a request by the President Museveni in December 2014, via a letter addressed to the Vatican, officially inviting the Holy Father to Uganda. The Holy See on 10th September 2015 officially communicated the acceptance of Pope Francis.
This visit was part of his African tour, which also included Kenya and the Central African Republic.
