Speaker Among Urges Muslim Community to Resolve Internal Conflicts Amicably

Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among has advised Muslims to seek an amicable resolution to the disagreements within their community.

During the annual Iftar dinner hosted by Parliament Minister Hajjat Minsa Kabanda read a speech on her behalf, expressing concern over the escalating conflicts within the Muslim community.

“Ramadhan this year coincides with a surge in divisions that threaten to further divide the Muslim community. As your Parliament, we are deeply concerned but encourage you to address these issues peacefully,” noted the Speaker.

Her remarks follow a recent communication from a faction of the General Assembly of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) to Parliament, outlining their intention to impeach Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubaje and replace him with his deputy, Sheikh Abdallah Ssemambo.

While Ssemambo attended the dinner, Mubaje was represented by Sheikh Anas Ssessimba. Various other Muslim leadership factions were also present.

Among reminded the Muslim community of the strength and security that unity brings, emphasizing the importance of standing together to resist external pressures.

Quoting Surat Al-Imran verse 103, Among said, “And hold fast to the rope of Allah, all together, and be not divided…Thus Allah does make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.”

She also announced a donation of Shs 50 million towards the acquisition of a 20-acre piece of land for the establishment of a Muslim cemetery. Imam Iddih Kasozi, spokesman for the Uganda Muslim Welfare Association, indicated that over Shs 1.5 billion is required for the project.
