Six Teachers, Invigilator Arrested for Exam Malpractice in Yumbe

Police in Yumbe have apprehended six teachers from Nampita Secondary School and an invigilator tasked with overseeing the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams at the same institution.

Jennifer Kalule-Musamba, the Principal Public Relations Officer of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), has disclosed that the group faces charges related to the possession of unauthorized materials and causing disturbance within an examination room.

The seven suspects, namely Julius Caesar Obbo (Economics teacher), Josephine Angukoru (Biology teacher), Boniface Ntibiringirwa, Godwin Wasswa, James Bamukabire, Emmanuel Okello, and Sadam Hussein (all teachers from Napita S.S.), along with the invigilator Bosco Oryema, were taken into custody.

Reportedly, on Thursday, October 19th, while the exams were in progress, the suspects entered the examination hall with power banks, smartphones, and a laptop, purportedly for charging. These actions raised suspicions among examiners, leading to the involvement of the police.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that one of the teachers, Julius Obbo, had answers for the biology practical examination stored on his smartphone.

In a joint press briefing at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, Kalule emphasized that the cases are under police jurisdiction.

In the midst of these events, two Special Needs Education (SNE) candidates tragically lost their lives during the week. Kalule confirmed that both candidates suffered from sickle cell disease and belonged to different schools. Edwin Wamutale was a student at St. Noa Mawagali SS in Jinja, and Celine Anne Namuwase attended St. Andrew Kaggwa, Gombe High School in Kawaala, near Kampala.

Furthermore, UNEB had a registered candidate who gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday, October 19th, 2023. Fortunately, the candidate did not have an exam that day and has since resumed her examination schedule.

Today, second-week candidates are taking their UCE exams. Currently, Senior Four candidates are in the midst of writing Physics Paper 1, which will be followed by Physics Paper 2 in the afternoon.
