Sheikh Mwanje In Custody At CMI Over Security Matters

The Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF) have confirmed the arrest and confinement of the Muslim cleric by plain clothed operatives on Monday.

Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje was arrested on Monday at the mosque of Salafiya Tablique Muslim Community in Nakasero by five operatives who bundled him into a Toyota Hiace alais Drone with registration number UBM 187E.

According to Brig. Gen  Felix Kulayigye the UPDF spokesperson,  has confirmed Sheikh Mwanje, is being held at the  Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence cells on security matters.

“He is suspected of engaging in security matters, we shall know,” Brig Gen Kulayigye briefly said to a reporter.

The CMI are also holding Sheikh Muhammad Buyondo alias, Matiya and Abdul Wahab Sendegeya both Boda-boda riders at Old Taxi Park and residents of Kyengera, in Wakiso district and Musa Sekandi, alias Masanafu.

Sheikh Mwanje has been a suspect in the murder of fellow sheikh and UPDF Maj Muhammad Kiggundu who was gunned down alongside his body guard in Masanafu on November 16, 2016.

He was jailed between 2016 and 2019 until he was granted bail by International Crimes Division Court. Mwanje alongside others also face charges of aiding and abetting terrorism and belonging to rebel group ADF.

His agile arrest also comes as various security institutions have been attacked by unknown assailants armed with guns but still targeting guns.
