Seven Arrested During Protest Over Court Martial Convictions
Seven protesters have been arrested following a demonstration staged in Kampala on the morning of January 9, 2025.
The protesters, described as alleged political activists, marched towards the High Court, calling for the release of lawyer Aaron Kiiza and opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The protest, which began at around 9:00 AM, involved two small groups carrying placards denouncing the conviction of Aaron Kiiza for contempt of court by the General Court Martial and demanding justice for other detained activists.
Among those arrested were Agatha Atuhairwe, identified as a mobilizer, along with Otieno George, Toko Godwin, Mubala Akram, Norah Kobusinge, Khatondi Wepuhulu, and Aloikin Praise Opoloje.
Police noted that two of the detained women, Norah Kobusinge and Aloikin Praise, were previously involved in a controversial naked protest at Parliament.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman says the suspects are currently being held at the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala, where case files are being prepared for the State Attorney. They are expected to face charges of being a common nuisance.
Onyango stated that the demonstration was illegal and warned against such actions that disrupt public order.
Further investigations are underway as authorities prepare to take the suspects to court.
