A 20-year-old security guard attached to Safetec Security Company Ltd has been remanded to prison over an alleged arson attack and theft at a forex bureau in Arua Park, Kampala.
Abraham Opedun appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, where Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe read out the charges against him.
Prosecution alleges that on 5 November 2025, Opedun and other suspects still at large deliberately set fire to Sinai Forex Bureau Ltd, located in the Nyumba Kubwa building at Arua Park.
He is also facing three counts of theft related to the same incident.
According to the prosecution, the accused and his accomplices allegedly stole $396 (about Shs1.5 million) and Shs15.2 million from the forex bureau. He is further accused of stealing $7,400 from Sitima Dina and $349 from Kakune Harriet in separate incidents.
The suspect denied all the charges.
State prosecutor Grace Amy informed the court that investigations are still ongoing and more suspects may be arrested.
Magistrate Neube noted that the arson charge is a serious offence, which affects bail considerations since it is classified as a semi-capital offence requiring a formal bail application through legal representation.
Opedun was remanded to Luzira Prison and will return to court on 1 April 2026 for mention of the case.
