Security Forces Unaware of the Re-arrest of Suspect Acquitted In Kirumira Murder
Lawyers representing Hamza Mwebe, a suspect who was recently acquitted by the High Court in the murder of Assistant Superintendent of Police Muhammad Kirumira and his friend Resty Nalinya claim he is missing.
Mwebe’s lawyer Zefania Zimbe told the Uganda Radio Network that his client was picked up by plain clothed men driving a drone shortly after he was released by High Court Judge Margaret Mutonyi on December 23, 2023.
Zimbe says he was informed by the men that Mwebe was being taken to Kampala Central Police Station for interrogation but he was never taken there.
“At CPS we were told he’s not there,” said Zimbe.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, has confirmed that Mwebe is not in any of their cells and would need to find out from their sister agencies to ascertain if they are the ones holding him.
The Defense Ministry Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye said that Mwebe wasn’t in the custody of the army.
On Friday, December 23rd, 2022, Justice Margaret Mutonyi acquitted Mwebe after the prosecution failed to explain why and how he was arrested and his connection to the double murder.
Mwebe had spent over two years on remand for his alleged involvement in the double murders that occurred in September 2018 in Wakiso district.
