The joint security forces involved in disarmament operations in Karamoja have reached their target of collecting 500 illegal firearms, which they had projected to be in the hands of rustlers.
According to the Mt. Moroto Regional Police spokesperson Micheal Longole 500 illegal guns and 3,590 rounds of ammunition were recovered from July 17th, 2021 to August 2022.
“The security situation in the region is now calm and the collection of these guns has made the cattle raids reduce completely,” he said.
He adds that between July 2021 and May 2022, security used to register up to 100 raids in one week across the region but now currently they can register one raid in a week.
He noted that despite meeting their target, the joint security forces will continue carrying out cordon and search operations to clean the entire region of illegal guns.
Peter Mudong, a resident of Campshwahili Chini in Moroto Municipality, wants security to shift focus on the increasing cases of burglaries in the Municipality.
“We are registering an increasing number of break-ins in Moroto Municipality so police should take serious action against them also,” he said.
