Security Forces Issue Stern Warning Against Unlawful Assemblies
Security forces have alerted the public about planned unlawful assemblies and countrywide political demonstrations orchestrated by selected politicians and change agents.
The key planners, including Col (Rtd) Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu, Hon. Erias Lukwago, and others, announced their intentions on January16, 2023, during a joint opposition press briefing.
According to Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Spokesperson, the group called on members of the public to join in protests, suggesting continued human rights violations among other factors. They also sought to change in government.
During the presser, former leader of opposition Winnie Kiiza, called on the public to plant a banana, yam or potato plant on roads in the City with potholes. She also called on the public to block roads where NAM delegates will be passing.
Enanga said similar announcements last year resulted in a few violent protesters being arrested and charged, highlighting the recurring trend of violent incidents masked as peaceful demonstrations.
He emphasized that security forces emphasized that the alleged peaceful demonstrations led by these perennial actors have never been peaceful in reality.
The politicians, according to Enanga, do not cooperate with the police to ensure the smooth conduct of public meetings and processions. Instead, they have been accused of hijacking the constitutional right to assemble, engaging in violent criminal acts such as looting, disrupting traffic, vandalizing vehicles and buildings, damaging roads through burning tires, pelting police officers, and hurling molotov cocktails.
While reaffirming their commitment to supporting and safeguarding constitutionally protected activities and civil rights, Enanga categorically stated that any activities with the potential for violence, including the mentioned unlawful assemblies, will not be tolerated.
” Security forces have urged the public to assist in identifying individuals actively mobilizing and instigating violence within the community by contacting the National Operations Command Centre at 0776999136.” he said
