Rwanda Expresses Reservation Over UK Migrant Intake
Rwanda’s government cannot promise how many migrants it will accept from the UK if flights start departing.
The UK’s plan involves sending migrants who arrive without permission to Rwanda instead of allowing them to claim asylum in the UK.
The UK has signed a five-year deal with Rwanda for this purpose, with costs estimated to be at least £300 million.
However, Rwanda’s government spokesperson Yolande Maloko stated that they cannot specify how many migrants they will take in the first or second year, nor can they guarantee accommodating all those currently in the backlog. The situation depends on various factors that are currently being worked out.
“I cannot tell you is how many thousands we’re taking in the first year or in the second year.”she said
52,000 asylum seekers could potentially be sent to Rwanda.Last month the Uk prime minister’s plans to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda passed in Parliament.
Uk PM Rishi Sunak said the first flight to Rwanda would leave in 10 to 12 weeks. Previously, the government said it aimed to start the flights in spring. Sunak said there would be “multiple flights a month through the summer and beyond”.
