Rt Rev. Jacob Ateirweho Consecrated as Sixth Bishop of Bunyoro Kitara

Rt Rev. Canon Jacob Ateirweho was consecrated as the sixth bishop of the Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese by the Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

The consecration ceremony took place during a special session at St. John’s Cathedral, Hoima.

Rt Rev. Jacob Ateirweho succeeds Rt. Rev. Samuel Kahuma Abwooli, who served as the fifth bishop for eight years before retiring at the age of 65. The transition marks a significant moment for the diocese as it welcomes new leadership.

During the ceremony, Archbishop Kaziimba highlighted the challenges facing the church, noting that many bishops are approaching retirement age. He emphasized the church’s commitment to sustainable development, a key decision made by the diocesan council during its reflection on ministry.

Archbishop Kaziimba also condemned recent kidnappings and called on the government to bring those involved in protests and political issues to justice.

In his consecration address, Rt Rev. Jacob Ateirweho took various oaths and vowed to combat practices contrary to church teachings, including homosexuality and corruption. He expressed a strong commitment to uphold the values and teachings of the church.

Bishop Nathan Ayimbisibwe of South Ankole, who delivered the sermon, urged ministers to remain truthful and dedicated in their service, emphasizing the importance of integrity.

Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja Musaafiri, representing President Museveni at the ceremony, congratulated the church on its contributions to the nation, including building schools, hospitals, and youth employment programs. She encouraged the church to continue mobilizing support for government initiatives.

Rev. Canon Jacob Ateirweho, born on August 24, 1968, at Hoima General Hospital, has been serving the church since April 5, 1991, when he confessed his faith. He was confirmed as a deacon on February 5, 2006, and ordained on July 23, 2006. He holds a degree in theology from Uganda Christian University Mukono and previously served as the Vicar of All Saints Church, Hoima, in the Diocese of Bunyoro Kitara. He is married to Irene Kobusinge, and they have five children.

As the new bishop, Rt Rev. Jacob Ateirweho is expected to lead the diocese with dedication and vision, building on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor and continuing to serve the community and the church.
