Road Users Advised To Opt For Alternative Routes As R. Katonga Floods On Masaka-Kampala Highway

Police have warned Motorists traveling along the Masaka-Kampala Highway to use alternative routes following the flooding of the River Katonga Bridge.

Police on Thursday, released pictures showing the flooded highway. Travelers on the other hand have also circulated multiple videos showing waters overflowing onto the road.

According to police , the water levels at Katonga River pose a serious risk to motorists and pedestrians attempting to cross.

It has been advised that travelers from Kampala are encouraged to utilize the Mpigi-Butambala-Ssembabule road as a viable alternative. While individuals travelling from Masaka are advised to take the Masaka-Ssembabule Road as a diversion. Please exercise caution, follow traffic instructions, and watch out for further updates. Your safety is our utmost priority.

Lydia TumushabeKatonga Region Police Spokesperson said that in a bid to ensure the safety of road users, they have been advised against using this section of the road at present.

“We strongly advise using alternative roads as we collaborate with Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA to address the situation promptly…please exercise caution, follow traffic instructions, and watch out for updates,” Tumushabe stated.

Kampala-Masaka Highway is one of the busiest roads in the country with an estimated average daily traffic count of over 30,000 vehicles. Only parts of Tanzania and DRC use the road as a gateway.
