Profile: Who is the New Police CID Boss Maj Tom Magambo?

On January 25, President Yoweri Museveni promoted Private Dr. Tom Magambo who is attached to Internal Security Organisations (ISO) to the rank of Major and appointed him the Director Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) in the Uganda Police Force.

Initially, Dr. Magambo was serving as the coordinator of the Eastern Africa Fusion and Liaison Unit (EA-FLU), a regional intelligence center based in Entebbe.

The unit is charged with countering terror threats in 10 countries including Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Tanzania.

About Maj Magambo

The new Director of Police CID, Major Tom Magambo Rwabudongo was born in 1978 and hails from Masindi District in Bunyoro Sub Region.

Before he was appointed to head the Regional Unit, he had served for twenty years in ISO where he rose to the highest rank of Chief Intelligence Officer (C.I.O) and was Director of Analysis.

Other responsibilities held in his career in ISO include heading Region Affairs where he was involved in EAC, IGAD, ICGLR, and AU Peace and Security Initiatives.

He also served in the dockets of Internal Counterintelligence, and Policy Analysis.

Specialized training

In terms of specialized training, he has done several Intelligence courses both within and abroad including with the US, Israel, UK, and Canada among others.

In terms of Academic record, at the time of his appointment, he was finalizing a Ph.D. in Mediation and Conflict Resolution. He holds an MBA (ESAMI), a Master’s in Peace and Conflict (MAK), and a Post Graduate Diploma in Peace and Security in Africa (PASA) from Uppsala University in Sweden. His first Degree was in Development Studies (MAK).
