Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, born on August 11, 1939, in Kinaba, Kinkizi District, Kigezi Region, was a distinguished figure whose life was marked by profound contributions to legal scholarship, public service, and the judiciary.
The eleventh and last-born child of Zakaliya Bafwokworora and Kyenda Malyamu Kyakundwa, his early education spanned Hamurwa Church School, Nyaruhanga Anglican Church Primary School, Nyakatare Church School, Kigezi High School, Busoga College Mwiri, and Norwich City College. He pursued higher education with dedication, earning a Bachelor of Laws from Portsmouth University and later a Ph.D. in law from the University of Warwick in the 1970s, which further honored him with an honorary LLD in 2008.
A Distinguished Legal and Judicial Career
Prof. Kanyeihamba’s legal career was truly illustrious, encompassing significant roles in academia, public service, and the highest echelons of the judiciary. He shared his extensive knowledge as a lecturer at esteemed institutions such as Portsmouth College (now University of Portsmouth), Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University), and the University of Wales in Cardiff. In Uganda, he served with distinction as a State Attorney at the Nsamizi Law School in Entebbe, which later evolved into the Law Development Center.
His judicial journey culminated with his appointment to the Supreme Court of Uganda in 1997, where he served with unwavering commitment until his retirement in November 2009. His tenure on the Supreme Court was characterized by a steadfast dedication to the principles of justice and the rule of law. Notably, he was part of the Supreme Court panel that presided over the landmark 2006 presidential election petition, where his judicial independence and commitment to constitutional principles were evident in the court’s deliberations and findings.

A testament to his dedication to the nation’s foundational legal framework, he chaired the Legal and Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly that meticulously crafted Uganda’s 1995 Constitution, a document that continues to guide the nation.
