Pretrial For Mps Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana Adjourned To March 27
The International Crimes Divison Court (ICD) has postponed the pretrial of accused Legislators Allan Ssewanyana, Makindye West and Muhammed Ssegirinya , Kawempe North to March 27, 2023.
The trial was adjourned on grounds that the were ill and therefore unfit to attend court.
The two MPs face criminal charges including attempted murder, murder and terrorism over a spate of killings in the Greater Masaka sub-region between May and July 2021 .
Ssewanyana who was brought to Court in Kololo on a stretcher pleaded through his lawyers, for the court to release his passport so that he can travel to Nairobi for better treatment.
The trial Judge, Alice Komuhangi Khauka adjourned the case until March 27, 2023.
According to their lawyer Samuel Muyiizi today was the first phase of the pretrial hearing involving the MPs and co accused.
he explained that the MPs in their condition had to make an appearance because the pleaders to their co-accused insisted that trial proceeds because they remain jailed while the MPs have temporal freedom. Their heir 4 co-accused persons are charged with murder, terrorism, and attempted murder relating to the spate of Machete murders that rocked the Greater Masaka Region in 2021.
Muyiizi also says Ssewanyana came to the precincts of parliament on a stretcher and medical personnel and court ordered that the defendants shouldnt present
“The pretrial was scheduled to proceed today but unfortunately due to health challenges we couldn’t proceed. However,Hon Ssegirinya irrespective managed to appear in court , he is still frail and not ready for trial. The Hon.Ssewanyana had come to court for two purposes, to attend and seek permission for him to travel for specialized treatment in Nairobi” said Muyizzi
