President Museveni Visits Landslide Stricken Bududa
At least 100 people were reported killed in a landslide in Bududa in March 2010 and in 2012 landslides destroyed three villages.
President Yoweri Museveni has this morning set off to Bududa district following the devastating landslides that have affected over 300 people.
At least 40 bodies have been recovered from the buried villages but over 300 people are still missing and feared dead while others are nursing serious injuries.
Previously, President Museveni and other government officials have warned advised people to stay away from risk areas although some of the residents do not want to leave their gardens behind.
In 2010, the attempt to shift Mt Elgon area settlers to Kiryandongo District in Bunyoro suffered a setback after the survivors of the Nametsi landslide complained of improper shelter, lack of land as well as food and water in the new settlement, with hundreds returning to the landslide-prone homes voluntarily.
Bududa district in the foothills of Mount Elgon, which lies on the border between Uganda and Kenya, is a high risk area for landslides.
At least 100 people were reported killed in a landslide in Bududa in March 2010 and in 2012 landslides destroyed three villages.
Again, government efforts to move vulnerable people to neighbouring districts have faced resistance from residents.
