President Museveni Calls For Full Public Cooperation in National Census
In a video message to the nation, President Yoweri Museveni has called upon all Ugandans to actively participate in the forthcoming 6th National Population and Housing Census, scheduled to commence on May 9, 2024.
President Museveni stated the critical role of accurate data in national planning and development. He highlighted the importance of gathering comprehensive demographic information to support Uganda’s Vision 2040 objectives.
“As we work towards achieving Vision 2040, it is crucial that we have accurate and reliable information about our people and resources,” President Museveni stated. He underscored the significance of the census data in guiding government policies and resource allocation across various sectors, including education, health, transportation, and more.
The President urged citizens to welcome enumerators into their homes and provide honest responses to ensure the collection of precise information about households, institutions, and communities. He called on political, cultural, and religious leaders, as well as the private sector and media, to rally behind this national effort.
“I there fore call upon all political, cultural and religious leaders , private sector players , the media and the government to support this Programme. The successful execution of this census will influence the well being of Ugandans and progress the country towards the desired social economic transformation” he noted
President Museveni called upon all Ugandans to actively participate in the census, urging them to welcome data collectors or enumerators into their homes and provide honest answers.
“When data collectors or enumerators come to your home, during the census please avail yourselves and provide them with honest answers to help the amass right information about you , your households, institutions and community.” he noted
He emphasized the importance of cooperation from political, cultural, and religious leaders, private sector stakeholders, the media, and the government to ensure the success of this national endeavor.
“The information from the census will help government , the private sector, cultural and religious institutions , civil society and development partners in service delivery and provide the basis for planning for the provision of social services such as education, health, and transport among many others at the national and local levels” President Museveni affirmed.
The census, scheduled to begin on May 10, 2024, aims to gather comprehensive demographic information essential for effective service delivery and planning of social services such as education, health, transportation, and more at both national and local levels.
This announcement marks a pivotal moment in Uganda’s development trajectory, setting the stage for informed decision-making and inclusive growth as the country strives towards its long-term vision.
Meanwhile, preparations for the census are in full swing, with over 100,000 trained enumerators and supervisors equipped with digital tablets for efficient data collection. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Chairperson Dr. Albert Byamugisha, recently revealed the need for comprehensive participation during the census period.
Dr. Byamugisha emphasized the importance of every individual being counted, noting that the census night would commence on Thursday, May 9th. The Ministry of Public Service has also declared Friday, May 10th, 2024, a public holiday to ensure widespread availability for the census exercise.
“The success of this census depends on the cooperation of all Ugandans. Let us work together to gather the accurate data needed to shape our nation’s future,” President Museveni concluded.
