President Museveni Stresses East African Integration for Regional Prosperity
During the 23rd Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania, President Yoweri Museveni emphasized the importance of regional integration for East Africa’s prosperity.
He highlighted that prosperity comes from producing goods or services and selling them, emphasizing the need for market integration. Museveni mentioned that Latin America, despite its rich natural resources, faces poverty due to a lack of organization and market access.
Museveni advocated for the integration of the East African market, stating that a unified market is essential for wealth creation and prosperity. He also cited strategic security and brotherhood, along with the common use of Swahili as a unifying language, as reasons for East African integration.
Outgoing EAC Chair Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi thanked counterparts for their support during his tenure, and the new EAC Chair Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan expressed belief in the community’s ability to address shared challenges. Somalia was admitted as the eighth member of the EAC during the summit.
Other attendees included the Presidents of Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, and Rwanda, the Prime Minister of Rwanda, the Vice Prime Minister of the DRC, and the EAC Secretary General, among others. The summit focused on accelerating economic recovery through climate action and enhancing food security for improved livelihoods.
