President Museveni Rallies Teso Leaders to Address Region’s Socio-Economic Challenges
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with a group of leaders from Teso sub-region at State House-Entebbe last evening. The delegation was headed by Mr. Calvin Echodu, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Soroti West Constituency. This meeting served as a follow-up to their previous engagement held on December 22, 2023, where President Museveni tasked the leaders with providing insights into various aspects, including household income, landholding, available enterprises, and government assistance in the region.
During Tuesday’s meeting, President Museveni received a comprehensive report from Mr. Echodu detailing the challenges faced by Teso and proposed solutions suggested by the leaders. He expressed satisfaction with the thorough analysis of the questions posed in December, promising to make necessary adjustments to the report and provide further guidance.
President Museveni emphasized the importance of diversifying farming activities in Teso to increase household income. He highlighted dairy farming through cross-breeding local cows with jersey cattle, poultry farming, and fish farming as viable options. He also mentioned government support for digging fishponds to alleviate the financial burden on farmers.
Additionally, President Museveni commended the choice of fruits for the Teju Fruit Factory and dismissed previous allegations of imported fruits. Mr. Echodu expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the opportunity to interact once again, acknowledging the committee’s research efforts across Teso districts.
Mr. Augustine Otuko, the Private Secretary to H.E the President in charge of Political Affairs, explained that the report aimed to provide solutions to the questions raised by President Museveni through consultations and research.
Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, the Deputy Ambassador of Uganda to Egypt, suggested the construction of larger dams to control flooding in Teso, facilitating improved fish farming. Ambassador Nelson Ocheger, the High Commissioner of Uganda to Nigeria, recommended intensifying efforts to attract private investors to establish fruit-processing factories in Teso.
The meeting also saw the presence of the Minister of State for Energy, Hon. Sidronius Okaasai Opolot, and Mr. Patrick Ongodia, among other leaders
