President Museveni promotes 773 senior police officers
Internal affairs Minister Gen Kahinda Otafire,who doubles as chairman of the police authority, presided over the event on Thursday afternoon.
President Museveni has promoted a total of 773 senior police officers.
Five of these were promoted from the rank of Senior Commission of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.
The promotion was in pursuant of powers as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces under section 9(1) of the Police Act Chapter 303, which gives the president the mandate, on the advice of the Police Authority, to promote police officers.
Internal affairs Minister Gen Kahinda Otafiire, who doubles as chairman of the police authority, presided over the event on Thursday afternoon.
Speaking during the ceremony, Otafiire said these promotions are based on the diligent service of the officers, in addition to better pay. He, however, noted that other ranks would be considered for promotion in due time.
“They have been promoted due to diligent service rendered, duration of their service, record of service and existence of vacancies to be filled,” he said.
Those promoted from Commissioner of Police to Senior Commissioners of Police include Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, Lawrence Nuwabiine, the Ag. Director of Traffic Police, Yusuf Ssewanyana, Director ICT, Moses Kafeero, Director Police College Bwebajja, and Frank Mwesigwa now Commander Tourism Police.
Others include Charles Birungi, who replaced retired Andrew Soroweni as Director of Police Welfare and Production, Fadhil Kaali, who is the Commander of Field Force Police (FFP), James Ocaya who has been serving as Director of Research, Planning, and Development, John Nuwagira who replaced Edward Ochom, and Richard Edyegu who replaced Godfrey Bangirana as Director Logistics and Engineering.
The promotion and appointment of the new AIGPs comes as the force retired other police directors including; Asan Kasingye, Grace Akullo, Edward Ochom, and Andrew Soroweni.
