President Museveni Officiates At Women’s Day Celebrations In Kiruhura

Uganda has joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day with main celebrations happening at Sanga play grounds, Sanga Town Council  in Kiruhura District.

This years theme is ” Promoting Digital Innovation through Equity” ,celebrating the women driving digital innovation and technological advancement. It focuses on a safer, more inclusive and more equitable digital future.

President Yoweri Museveni is gracing the event alongside First lady Janet Kataha Museveni at his home district. Among other government officials present at the event include Vice President Jessica Alupo, Rt. Hon Speaker Anita Among, NRM Vice Chair Moses Kigongo, Rt. Hon Prime Minister Robbinah Nabbanja and Lydia Wanyoto the Vice Chair Women’s laegue among others.

Maj. Nisima Rwemijuma the spokesperson Second Division at the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) says the event has not been restricted to anyone.

“Here there are no restrictions , everyone should come and enjoy the parade as we celebrate the women’s day”  says Rwemijuma

However, women in Sanga TC have called on government to set up a health center iv to support expectant mothers who overwhelm the Health Center iii in the area. They also want more government aided schools instituted and a school fees policy to regulate fees.

President Museveni also earlier launched the ICT center at the National Science, Technology, Engineering, and Innovation Skills Enhancement Project in Rwebitete, Kiruhura district.

The first recorded celebration was in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland when over a million people rallied to support women’s rights.

Since then, the event has grown not only in size but also in its scope. Focus has expanded to issues ranging from violence against women to parity in the workplace.
