President Museveni Calls for Wealth Distribution to Empower Women on International Women’s Day”

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged Ugandans to strive for universal wealth to address challenges faced by women.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day Celebrations on March 8th, 2024, held at Boma Grounds, Katakwi District, he emphasized the importance of wealth distribution to mitigate issues such as bride price and gender inequality.

Under the theme “Accelerating Gender Equality Through Women Economic Empowerment,” President Museveni highlighted the potential of families, particularly through land ownership, to engage in commercial agriculture for socioeconomic development.

He stressed the need for education and participation in the money economy to achieve this goal, criticizing the introduction of fees in government schools and advocating for free education.

The President called for a concerted effort to empower women economically, citing success stories in various sectors such as dairy farming and oil palm projects. He pledged government support for initiatives like expanding fruit factories and promoting diverse agricultural activities.

During the event, President Museveni signed Memoranda of Understanding to support women entrepreneurs and distributed funds to businesswomen in several districts.

He also recognized individuals for their contributions to Uganda’s development, including Vice President Jessica Alupo and those involved in apprehending criminals.

Vice President Alupo praised President Museveni’s leadership in promoting women’s participation in national development and committed to supporting his reelection bid in 2026.

Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development Betty Amongi highlighted the government’s affirmative action policies and programs, emphasizing the importance of addressing root causes of gender inequality.

Hon. Peace Mutuuzo, Minister of State for Gender and Culture, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for prioritizing women’s empowerment and assured him of Ugandans’ support in the country’s transformation efforts.
