President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with Mr. Peter Sands, the Executive Director of the Global Fund, at State House in Entebbe .

The Global Fund, established in 2002, is dedicated to raising and distributing funds to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in low- and middle-income countries.

During the meeting, President Museveni urged the Global Fund to consider purchasing drugs, vaccines, and essential medical supplies from local manufacturers to support Uganda’s knowledge economy. He emphasized the importance of investing in vaccines, drugs, and scientific innovations, highlighting their significance for a country like Uganda.

Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, outlined four key areas for potential procurement, including antiretroviral drugs for HIV treatment, rapid diagnostic tests for malaria and HIV, long-lasting insecticidal nets, and medical gloves.

President Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to combating HIV/AIDS and malaria, emphasizing the importance of prevention alongside treatment efforts.

He highlighted the progress made in HIV prevention over 30 years, with decreasing rates and improved adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ARVs), while stressing the need for individuals with HIV to prioritize self-care to manage drug-induced exhaustion.

“For 30 years, we’ve spread our HIV prevention message. Today, rates are down, and those with HIV are adhering to ARVs. Yet, they must be mindful of drug-induced exhaustion and prioritize self-care.”said Museveni

President Museveni also discussed Uganda’s economic progress, emphasizing the nation’s transition towards economic diversification and the expansion of its monetary economy. He noted achievements in tourism, coffee production, cotton, and tea, highlighting these as indicators of Uganda’s developmental progress.
