President Museveni and Kagame Meet in Nairobi

Presidents Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame have today met physically for the first time following the reopening of the Uganda and Rwanda border, over a month ago.

The two leaders whose countries have in the past years traded accusations against each other are today witnessing the signing ceremony for the Treaty of Accession to the East African Community by the Democratic Republic of Congo in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

Uhuru Kenyatta is the current chairman of the East African Community.

On Friday, morning, both leaders almost arrived at the same time in Nairobi before exchanging pleasantries.

“I have arrived in Nairobi, Kenya for the Signing Ceremony of the Treaty of Accession to the East African Community by the Democratic Republic of Congo,”Museveni tweeted later.

The Nairobi meeting is the first time both leaders are meeting face to face with each other following the reopening of the border last month.

It is however, not clear whether the two leaders will later meet on the sidelines of the signing ceremony in Nairobi.

Museveni and Kagame last met face to face in February 2020 at the Katuna border as part of the talks that were aimed at solving the border impasse between the two countries.

However, the meeting didn’t have so much tangible results.

However, there was a breakthrough after the Commander Land Forces in the UPDF, Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who is also President Museveni’s Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations met with President Kagame in Kigali on several occasions.

Consequently, the border was reopened as both countries opened a new chapter in their relations.
