Police have issued a stern warning to the public against engaging in the hazardous practice of siphoning fuel from overturned tankers following a recent incident in Busowa, Bugiri on February 9, 2025.
The vehicle, which lost control, overturned, spilling its contents and prompting residents to rush to the scene with jerrycans in hand.
Uganda Police Spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, shared disturbing photos of the incident, showing people attempting to collect fuel despite the obvious dangers. While the images have yet to be officially shared on police social media platforms, Rusoke confirmed their release soon.
“These are the same people who, despite the obvious risks, continue to rush to scenes like these with jerrycans,” he remarked.
He stressed the serious risks involved, including the potential for explosions, referencing the tragic Bombo Rd Kigoogwa incident in Wakiso. In that case, 12 lives were lost, and many others were left injured when a fuel tanker overturned and caught fire as people attempted to siphon fuel.
“We find it difficult to prevent this behavior upfront,” Rusoke explained. “These vehicles often crash in areas where citizens reside, and they are usually the first to reach the accident site.” He added that police often arrive as the second responders, sometimes finding that the damage has already been done.
The police have called on local leaders and community members to take immediate action to discourage this dangerous practice.
“We urge the public to take lessons from the recent fatal incidents and refrain from approaching overturned fuel tankers,” Rusoke said.
The public has been advised to remain cautious, and police continue to use media platforms to raise awareness about the fatal consequences of such reckless behavior.
