The Uganda Police have issued a stern warning to criminal gangs allegedly planning to disrupt this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations at the Namugongo shrines, stating that any attempts to cause chaos will be met with firm and decisive action.

Martyrs’ Day, observed every year on June 3rd, draws thousands of pilgrims to Namugongo from across the country and beyond. However, authorities have noted that some individuals exploit the large crowds to commit criminal acts.

While addressing the media yesterday, Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the Joint Operation Command is actively coordinating efforts to ensure public safety during the event, and he promised strong and effective countermeasures.

He disclosed that criminal gangs, often moving in groups referred to as “egaali,” are notorious for robbing and harassing unsuspecting pilgrims.

He emphasized that this time, the Police are prepared to deal with them decisively. Kituuma Rusoke also urged the public to remain vigilant—not only against criminals but also against imposters pretending to be priests in order to take advantage of the occasion.
