Police Report New Year’s Incidents: Stampede, Fatal Accidents, and Arrests

As Ugandans ushered in the new year, the Kampala Metropolitan Police reported a series of incidents, ranging from a stampede at a church crusade to fatal road accidents and arrests related to dangerous items.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, provided a summary of the incidents during a media briefing.

He dismissed reports that a stampede at a New Year’s Eve crusade organized by Pastor Tom Mugera at Wankulukuku grounds left people dead. Owoyesigyire clarified that the incident left 15 women injured. Eight of the victims were rushed to Kitebi and Mulago hospitals, where they are reportedly responding well to treatment.

“I want to confirm that no one died as a result of the stampede,” Owoyesigyire assured.

He also revealed that two fatal road accidents were recorded during the celebrations. One occurred in Entebbe, while the other, more bizarre, took place in Nateete. In the latter, a truck driver parked his vehicle on a slope to argue with another motorist. Unfortunately, the truck rolled downhill, hitting three motorcycles and killing one person, a Sudanese national. A baby and a boda-boda rider were also injured and are currently hospitalized.

He further stated that in Seeta, Mukono, a shooting incident occurred. Police responded to disperse the crowd, and stray bullets injured one individual. Owoyesigyire said the victim is currently out of danger and receiving medical attention as investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Police also arrested several individuals in connection with suspicious or dangerous items. At Kisugu, a man was detained after being found with two bullets while attempting to enter a church. Additionally, two others were arrested in possession of items believed to be fireworks. Police are investigating the origins of these items.

Owoyesigyire mentioned that police had responded to various incidents related to traffic, fire outbreaks, theft, and attempted murders during the festive season.

“We will continue investigations into these incidents and provide further updates,” Owoyesigyire stated.

According to Owoyesigyire, 100 suspects were arrested in relation to various crimes.
