Police Officers Urged to Prioritize Cybersecurity for Personal and Institutional Safety

Police officers have been strongly urged to prioritize cybersecurity to protect both their personal and institutional data.

This call comes from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Haguma Jimmy, who is the Acting Commissioner of Police Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) within the ICT directorate. He emphasized the crucial role of implementing measures to enhance and strengthen the Force’s cybersecurity.

SSP Haguma Jimmy emphasized, “If any of us becomes a victim of cyber threats, the entire institution is exposed to the same risk. This concept is similar to the saying, ‘A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.’ We are all vulnerable at any given time, which is why regular security checks, software updates, and the use of strong passwords are essential.”

During the training, officers were provided with strategies to protect themselves from digital attacks, cybercrimes, and social engineering tactics.

They also received guidance on ethical online practices, proper online etiquette, and effective management of their electronic devices. This included scheduling breaks, using noise-canceling devices, and rewarding themselves for completing focused tasks.

An increasing number of officers, including those from the Counter Terrorism and Criminal Investigation Directorate, which play pivotal roles in investigations and intelligence gathering, have benefited from these cybersecurity tips.

The one-week sensitization program is being extended to police officers in various directorates and will soon be expanded nationwide, starting with the Kampala Metropolitan area. Officers who have already undergone this training are from the Directorate of Forensic Services and Interpol and International Relations.
