The Uganda Police Force’s deputy spokesperson, Claire Nabakka, reported that the police and the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership held a constructive meeting to address safety concerns related to vehicle overloading and reckless driving.

Nabakka stated that the consultative meeting on July 11, 2024, was prompted by a fatal accident involving NUP supporters on May 31, 2024.

“The accident occurred along the Kampala-Masaka highway, resulting in three fatalities and two serious injuries. This incident led the police to halt the NUP’s consultative activities to review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy,” Nabakka explained.

Nabakka indicated that both parties reviewed CCTV footage of the May 31 procession and made several key observations.

“The findings highlighted vehicle overloading, reckless driving, and the involvement of a Toyota Hiace that collided with several motorcycles, leading to the fatalities,” she noted.

Several resolutions were reached to ensure the safety of all road users.

“These resolutions include the immediate cessation of carrying people on vehicle rooftops, limiting the number of passengers in vehicles, and strict adherence to traffic regulations,” Nabakka added.

The NUP leadership acknowledged that the meeting and resolutions represent a positive step towards finding common ground and addressing the concerns raised.

“We are committed to working with the police to ensure the safety of our supporters and all Ugandans during our events,” stated the NUP leadership.

However, the NUP leadership was urged to take responsibility for the conduct of their members and ensure they adhere to the agreed-upon measures.

Both parties recognized the need for continued engagement and cooperation to maintain law and order during political activities.

The police reiterated their constitutional mandate to protect life and property and their authority to regulate assemblies and processions on public roads, pledging to continue engaging with other political parties and organizations to promote a peaceful and secure environment for all.
