The Kampala Metropolitan Police have launched investigations into a tragic robbery in Kiwatule Central Zone, Nakawa Division, that claimed the lives of two individuals on the evening of November 21, 2024.

The deceased have been identified as Tugume Albert, a mobile money operator, and Sabiti Barnabas, a boda boda rider who tried to assist during the robbery.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the incident occurred at approximately 7:00 PM as Tugume, 34, was preparing to close his shop. He was ambushed by an armed assailant seeking to rob him of cash. In a bid to help, Sabiti, 30, was shot by a second assailant waiting nearby.

Owoyesigyire says despite an attempt to flee, Tugume was pursued and fatally shot. The suspects escaped with a bag believed to contain an unspecified amount of money. Police recovered critical evidence at the scene, including a vehicle (registration UBH 045H) damaged by stray bullets.

Sabiti was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries. Tugume’s body was taken to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination.

Police have appealed to the public for information that could help apprehend the perpetrators.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The Kampala Metropolitan Police remains committed to ensuring justice is served,” Owoyesigyire said.

On Thursday night, the Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura revealed that her young brother, Tugume Albert Cook Apuuli  was the victim that was shot dead by gunmen.

In a post on her official X platform she revealed:

“My young brother, Tugume Albert Cook Apuuli aged 33 years was shot dead by gunmen a few minutes past 8;00PM on Thursday 21st Nov 2024 at his mobile money and agent banking shop on Ntinda Kiwatule Road (Muvule, central road). Cook attempted to take off from the gun men but he could only run so far, the cowards shoot him three times, took off with his bag containing the money, mobile agent lines and bank agent machines. The gunmen jumped on a waiting boda boda and took off! A boda guy called Barnabas was shot while attempting to save my brother’s life, Barnabas we are told is at Mulago hospital receiving treatment, we are praying for his speedy recovery and we are forever indebted to him for his heroic act. A church Service for Albert Cook will be held today, Friday at 2;00PM at St Luke Church Ntinda.” she wrote
