The police in Wakiso District are investigating the circumstances under which a 9-year-old pupil, Nanyonga Shanitah, drowned in a water channel near Kid’s Nest Nursery and Primary School in Kabuuma, Wakiso District.
According to police reports, the incident occurred after the pupil returned home to collect a forgotten pen. While attempting to cross the water channel on her way back to school, she slipped and was swept away by the fast-moving water.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, confirmed the development, stating that statements had been recorded from witnesses. “We are looking into whether negligence played a role in this tragic incident,” he said.
He says that authorities were notified at around 11:00 am, prompting a response from the police and the marine unit, which is currently working to recover the body. The water channel, located approximately 10 meters from the school, has been described as carrying a significant volume of water, raising safety concerns.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police have arrested the school director, Kibirango Esther, and the school’s security guard, Ssentongo Peter, to assist with inquiries.
The drowning has sparked concern among parents and the local community, with calls for improved safety measures near schools, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
