Lira Police Arrest Pastor and Doctor for Dealing Expired Items
Police in Lira are holding a pastor and a doctor accused of stealing and being in possession of expired medical equipment.
The suspects, Pastor James Odeke, 55, and Dr. Neri Emmanuel, 28, were captured red handed, in broad daylight while offloading the expired medical supplies at Victory Outreach Church in the Teso Bar area of Lira City.
The expired medical equipment, which bore labels from Partners for World Health, was being transferred into a District Health vehicle with registration number UG 2336M.
Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Force spokesperson, said the expired items possed a life threatening risks to the public.
“The fact that the expired items were being offloaded into another medical vehicle shows a possibility of their intended use in patient treatment, making both suspects an immediate danger to the public.”he said
Enanga called for proper disposal of expired medical supplies to prevent any risks to health and safety.
“Expired medical products do not retain their intended strength, quality, and purity. The best way to handle expired medical equipment or supplies is by disposing of them in a manner that is medically appropriate,” he stated.
He urged medical practitioners to ensure that all medical products used in treatments are within their expiration dates to avoid any adverse effects on patients.
