Police Hunt for Headteacher Over Viral Video Torturing Three Pupils
Police in Kamuli Central Police Station (CPS)hunting for a primary school head teacher on the run, over allegations of aiding severely punishing female pupils.
The suspect identified as Nambi Kezekiya, the Headteacher of Butegere Primary School in Butansi Sub-county, was captured in a viral video looking on, while the girls were severly canned by three pupils with a heavy stick as a form of punishment.
The incident sparked widespread outrage from members of the public including; parents, local residents, child activists, and educationists, prompting police intervention.
The video captures the school’s security guard, identified as Kitungula David, who doubles as the uncle of the victims, brutally caning, dragging, and torturing the three girls in the presence of Headteacher.
Fred Enanga the uganda police spokesman said despite efforts from one of the teachers to stop the assault, Nambi’s watched on with no reaction.
Enanga says his inaction has been labeled as gross negligence and abetting a crime.
Enanga explains that the children, Naigaga Anitah (12), Nangobi Whitney (10), and Nangobi Benitah (13), were being punished for allegedly stealing firewood. However, the matter had reportedly been settled amicably when their mother, Nairuba Eseza, was fined UGX 100,000.
She had paid UGX 30,000 and was scheduled to pay the remaining UGX 70,000 on June 21, 2024.
However, on June 20, 2024, Kitungula , their uncle, took the children to the school and subjected them to severe physical punishment in front of the headteacher. Kitungula is now scheduled to appear in court to face three counts of torture.
According to Enanga, the three girls are currently receiving counseling and medical treatment from the Child and Family Protection Unit.
He asserts that the use of corporal punishment in schools is criminal under Article 106(a) of the Children’s Act, and attracts up to 3 years jail time or a fine of 2.4 million or both for offenders.
