Police Force Issues Warning Against Planned Demonstration
The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has clearly articulated its position regarding plans by some groups organising the anti corruption walk to parliament.
According to the Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma, on July 15, 2024, police issued a warning to unidentified individuals who were engaged in a social media mobilization campaign with plans to hold ‘tribeless, fearless and party-less protests, stating that police could not support faceless protests.
He instead urged the organisers to notify the Inspector General of Police in writing about their intention to march to Parliament through a procession and demonstration, to give their campaign a face.
“The mobilization placards called upon Ugandans to occupy all streets in Kampala as part of their march to Parliament. Such a mass occupation of the streets, from the police perspective, would likely result in significant traffic congestion, disruption of trade, and disturbances to public order.” he told journalists on Monday
He further stated that the UPF finally met with the organisers on July 18, 2024, at police headquarters and following a thorough security assessment on a political procession, the UPF has formally advised the organizers against proceeding and urges them to heed this counsel.
“We made attempts to dissuade the organizers from what we saw as a potentially anarchic approach following a thorough security assessment regarding the feasibility of a procession.” said Kituuma
Kituuma, emphasizes police stance against public disorder saying they will not permit any disorderly conduct on the streets of Kampala.
