Police Foil Potential Terrorist Attack, Arrest Suspect

Counter-Terrorism police, in collaboration with the territorial team in Kampala Metropolitan East, successfully responded to an alarming situation when an explosive device detonated accidentally during its assembly.

The incident occurred after the suspect tampered with the device, prompting the immediate deployment of a task team to handle the situation.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Mugabe Collins, was apprehended during a search operation at Banda zone II, Nakawa Division.

Police conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s location and recovered an assembled Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along with note and textbooks on bomb-making materials.

Police also recovered other hazardous materials including 3 jerrycans of nitric acid, methanol, and ethanol, as well as 6 bottles containing potassium nitrate, potassium bromide, ammonium nitrate, lead nitrate, and aluminum metal powder.

SCP Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson says Mugabe had already constructed two IEDs, one of which accidentally detonated during his tampering with it at night.

Enanga explains that the suspect is currently undergoing rigorous interrogation to ascertain any potential links to terror groups and identify potential targets.

He has applauded the prompt action and vigilance of the police and the local community in Banda zone II, Nakawa, for playing a crucial role in averting a potential disaster.
