Security deploys heavily in Kampala to halt planned protests

Police has warned individuals and groups planning protests to do it through the legal means, established in the Public Order Management Act.

This follows intelligence reports that a section of the public is planning to protest irregularities in registration of Boda bodas, fuel and high commodity prices.

Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Spokesperson says they have received information that a group of people are planning a demonstration on Tuesday in the City Center.

He says the group also plans to petition the Speaker of Parliament.

Owoyesigyire has pinned a section of politicians as facilitators of the protests meant to destabilize normal business in the City.

He says they are disguising themselves by presenting a petition to Parliament to complain about  irregularities in the ongoing registration of Boda boda riders by Kampala Capital City Authority, KCCA and fees charged against boda boda riders.

“We have received information that political factions are  spearheading this illegal demonstration. We would like to warn the organizers and participants that they will be arrested and prosecuted for organizing an illegal demonstration. “ he says

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga on Monday warned that selected individuals and groups were plotting unlawful processions and assemblies, as a way of expressing discontent against the surge in commodity prices and fuel.

He said unlawful protests and demonstrations incite violence, disrupt people’s rights, destroy and vandalize property, markets and pedestrians among others.
