Police Crack Down on Taxi Crime Gang: Four Suspects Nabbed
Police have apprehended four suspects including their ring leader believed to be involved in a series of abductions and murders targeting female passengers.
The suspects, identified as Katongole Abbas, Matovu Ronald, both conductors of taxi registration number UAU 738T, and Turyashemerewa Herber the driver operated along the Kampala-Entebbe route.
The head of the gang Isaac Niwagaba, 32, a driver by profession and a resident of Rwakimuli Cell, Bukinda Trading Center, Bukinda Sub County, Rukiga District was also arrested.
The arrests were made following advanced surveillance efforts that linked the suspects to the disappearances and deaths of several women.
Fred Enanga the uganda police spokesman said Niwagaba is directly behind the murder anf kidnap of young girls in Kampala (Kajjansi) .
The suspects’ modus operandi involved targeting women who were either on their way to work in the early morning hours or returning home late in the evening. The victims were abducted, strangled to death, blindfolded with face masks or polythene bags, and robbed of their valuables. The grisly pattern has been linked to at least six women, whose bodies were discovered with similar signs of assault and robbery.
One of the latest victims, Nangobi Sandra, was reported missing on the morning of 15 May 2024. Her mother, Tendo Sulaina, reported her disappearance to the Kajjansi Police Division after Sandra left home at 5 a.m. but never arrived at her workplace in Makindye. Her phone was found switched off, and her whereabouts remained unknown until police investigations revealed the involvement of the aforementioned taxi crew.
The impounded taxi is currently parked at the Kajjansi police division, and efforts are underway to track down other members of the suspected crime gang. Police have gathered substantial evidence linking the gang to the heinous crimes, and DNA samples have been obtained for comparison with samples collected from the victims and the taxi.
