The Uganda Police Force has issued a statement condemning attacks on security officers during the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential campaign held in Kawempe North and Kawempe South on Monday.
National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine during his rallies in Kawempe, gathered large crowds of supporters to hear him speak, but some events were disrupted as security forces intervened, to halt growing processions.
The processions saw injuries inflicted on police officers during stone-throwing incidents. In Kawempe North, planned rallies in Bwaise 1 parish were blocked, forcing his team to relocate to Komamboga grounds for a final campaign event.
Bobi Wine accused security agencies of targeting his campaign by arresting dozens of his team members nationwide, including those supporting his Kawempe activities. He also criticized attempts by the ruling party to stage defections, alleging that fake NUP members were being paraded to weaken his support base.
According to the police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke says , prior arrangements were made between police, the Electoral Commission, and the NUP organizing committee to ensure the candidate’s venues and routes were secure. Despite these preparations, security officers were reportedly attacked with stones at the NUP headquarters, Bwaise Roundabout, and other campaign venues.
Kituumsa says seven security officers sustained serious injuries, and several security vehicles, including an ambulance, were damaged during the incidents. Police said they responded by using public order measures to control the crowd, and seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks.
Kituuma further condemned the hooliganism and warned that such behavior is unacceptable, stressing that it will be met with firm action.
