Police Arrest 23 Suspects in Intelligence-Led Operation at Nakasero Market
In response to a surge in petty crimes such as simple robberies, phone, and bag snatching targeting market-goers, the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala has executed a comprehensive intelligence-led operation around Nakasero Market and its surrounding areas.
This decisive action follows numerous public complaints about the increasing incidents of theft in the bustling market area.
The operation has caused the arrest of 23 suspects believed to be involved in these criminal activities. The suspects are currently detained at CPS Kampala, where they will undergo thorough screening before being prosecuted in the courts of law.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, the operation was meticulously planned and executed based on intelligence gathered over recent weeks. Officers were deployed strategically around the market and in adjacent streets, targeting hotspots identified through both public reports and undercover surveillance.
Onyango stated, “This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of the public, particularly in busy commercial areas like Nakasero Market. We have received numerous reports from citizens who have fallen victim to these petty criminals, and our aim is to restore confidence and a sense of security among the market patrons.”
The arrested suspects face charges related to theft and robbery, and the police have assured the public that each case will be handled with the utmost diligence to ensure justice is served.
Onyango further added that these operations are not a one-time event but part of a continuous effort to curb crime in the Kampala Metropolitan Policing (KMP) area.
“Similar operations are being carried out across other parts of the KMP region,” the spokesperson said. “We are determined to tackle crime at its roots and will continue to employ intelligence-led tactics to apprehend those who seek to disrupt public order and safety.”
Residents and market-goers have expressed relief at the increased police presence and the proactive measures being taken to address the crime wave. Many hope that these operations will lead to a sustained decrease in theft and related crimes, making Nakasero Market a safer place for both vendors and shoppers.
The police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
“Community cooperation is crucial in our fight against crime,” the spokesperson emphasized. “We encourage citizens to come forward with any information that could assist us in maintaining law and order.” said Onyango
