Police Arrest 14 in Kireka Operation, Seize Opium
Police have arrested 14 suspects in Kireka Railway Zone following a targeted operation against narcotic-related activities.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson, the suspects were detained on charges of possession of opium after police officers, in collaboration with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and local leaders, raided several small bars and a video hall suspected of being hotspots for opium sales and smoking.
The operation, which took place on January 29, 2025, at 9:00 PM, was initiated based on intelligence suggesting that these establishments were involved in facilitating criminal activities, including the terrorizing of Namugongo and Bweyogere divisions. Onyango says they recovered significant quantities of opium during the raid, which has been presented as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Onyango confirmed that the suspects are currently being held pending court proceedings.
“This operation is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing crime in the area, particularly those linked to narcotics. We are committed to ensuring that Kireka becomes free of illegal drug trade and its associated criminal activities.” Onyango stated.
This operation is part of sustained efforts by the police to address the growing concern over drug use and trafficking along the Kireka railway line. Onyango pledged on behalf of the force to continue targeting criminal networks and ensuring public safety in the region.
