Passenger Train Services Resume on Kampala-Namanve Route

Passengers commuting along the Kampala to Banda-Kireka-Bweyogerere-Namanve route can now rejoice as the Uganda Railways Corporation has resumed its passenger train services.

New stages have been designated along the railway route and the trip fare adjusted since the transportation took a break for rennovation.

This revival comes after a suspension of over a year to facilitate the rehabilitation of the railway line, a project initially anticipated to conclude within six months. The Kampala-Namanve 25km railway line was closed for refurbishment in April 2023.

A section of passengers who boarded the train noted that the facilities within are more comfortable and refurbished than before. However some expressed concern that the current fees of 2000 shillings charged to customers should be revised to 1000 shillings to cater for the majority. The passenger train includes working-class individuals and students seeking reliable transportation options.

“If using a taxi to town costs between 2000 and 3000 shillings, then Uganda railways should slash the price to at least 1000, it will really help many of us. Otherwise the service is very good, we really appreciate, we have been waiting for a year and here we are” said Opio Julius

The Acting Managing Director of the Uganda Railways Corporation, David Bulega Musoke, expressed optimism regarding the reinstatement of this vital transportation service. He said  the train service has the capacity to offer passengers a faster and safer mode of travel.

“Usually, the beginning is challenging; for instance, if you miss the train by five minutes, but our goal is to ensure that morning passengers are catered to, with the train departing by 8:10 am,” stated Musoke. He also addressed pricing concerns, noting that the train operates fairly, considering that a liter of fuel costs 5000 shillings.

Bulenga mentioned that the renovations effort focused on addressing critical issues such as hazardous spots and damaged lines and installation of new concrete sleepers to enhance stability.

He added that trial runs have been conducted to ensure the safety and efficiency of the train service.

The resumption of passenger train operations is expected to provide commuters with an alternative means of transportation, easing congestion on roadways and offering a reliable and cost-effective option for daily travel along this busy route.

The Corporation aims to enhance service reliability and efficiency, catering to the needs of passengers seeking convenient and affordable transportation options within the Kampala metropolitan area.
