Parliamentary Committee Demands Explanation on Rising Murders

Members of the Defence and Internal Affairs committee in Parliament have tasked Major General Kahinda Otafiire, the Minister for Internal Affairs, with explaining the rising incidents of killings in the country, causing widespread panic among the public.

Legislators express concern over recent events, including the attempted assassination of Pastor Aloysius Bugingo and the murder of Masindi District Health Officer Dr. Jino Abiriga. They highlight the unsettling impact of these cases on public peace.

Today, officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, led by Maj. Gen Kahinda Otafiire and Gen David Muhoozi, presented the Ministry’s budget framework paper for 2024/2025 before the committee.

Otafiire lamented the proposed UGX 465 billion cut in resources for the Ministry, emphasizing its potential adverse effects on the operations of Uganda Police, Uganda Prisons, NIRA, and the Immigration department.

The Minister assures ongoing investigations into all recent cases of murder and attempted assassinations.

The Committee engages in a serious debate on the hiring of panga-wielding individuals for land-grabbing in some areas of the country. The Minister distances the police from such activities and instructs the immediate arrest of any individuals involved.
