Parliament Set for Special Session to Pay Tribute to Late Minister Sarah Mateke

Parliament will hold a special sitting on Tuesday, 10th September 2024, to honor the late Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, the former Woman Representative for Kisoro District and Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Defence).

The session is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM, where legislators and government officials will pay their final respects.

This morning, the Speaker of Parliament Anitah Among  has received the body of Hon Mateke, and it will lie in the foyer for public viewing, ahead of the special sitting this afternoon, where MPs are expected to pay tribute.

The program for the session outlines a solemn sequence of events, beginning with prayers and communication from the Chair. Following this, the casket of the late minister will be transferred from the central lobby to the parliamentary chamber, marking the commencement of tributes. Both the Uganda National Anthem and the East African Community Anthem will be played, after which the laying of wreaths will take place.

A formal motion will then be moved by the Prime Minister, calling for a resolution of Parliament to pay tribute to Hon. Nyirabashitsi. The motion will be seconded by Hon. Oboth Jacob Marksons, MP for West Budama Central County and Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

Once tributes have been delivered, the anthems will be played in reverse order as the casket exits the parliamentary chamber, concluding the special sitting. The adjournment of Parliament will follow shortly thereafter.

This special session follows the recent passing of Hon. Nyirabashitsi, whose career in public service spanned various roles, most notably as a staunch advocate for veterans and women’s rights in her district of Kisoro.

The tribute session is expected to draw reflections on her legacy, contributions, and impact on both the local and national stage.

Former Minister Mateke passed away on Saturday, 7th September 2024 after suffering a heart attack. She was rushed to Mengo Hospital, where she breathed her last.

According to the burial program released by Adolf Mwesigye, the clerk to Parliament, on Wednesday September 11, 2024, the body will be transported to Nyakabingo, Kisoro District where a council session will take place at 2:00pm to pay tribute to the late. This will be followed by a church service at 4:00pm, then an overnight vigil.

On Thursday, 12th September 2024, the final church service will be held at Nyakabingo, followed by her burial in the afternoon.
