MPs Gather at Parliament for Prayers for Late Minister Hon. Mateke Nyirabashitsi
Members of Parliament have assembled at Parliament for the prayers of the late Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. today.
The Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, and Kisoro District Woman MP passed away on Saturday, 7th September 2024 after suffering a heart attack. She was rushed to Mengo Hospital, where she breathed her last. The late Mateke was the MP for Kisoro district..
The Speaker of Parliament has released the burial program for the late after consultations with Ministry of Defence. Following the service, Hon. Mateeke’s body will be transported to her residence in Nsangi.
According to a statement released by Adolf Mwesigye, the clerk to Parliament, on Tuesday, the body will be taken to “All Saints Cathedral” at 8:00am before being brought back to Parliament at 12 p.m. for public viewing, ahead of a Special Sitting at 2 p.m.
On Wednesday September 11, 2024, the body will be transported to Nyakabingo, Kisoro District at 9:00am, a council session will take place at 2:00pm to pay tribute to the late. This will be followed by a church service at 4:00pm, then an overnight vigil.
On Thursday, 12th September 2024, the final church service will be held at Nyakabingo, followed by her burial in the afternoon.
Speaker Among confirmed that the adjusted program was drafted after consultations with the Ministry of Defence and the deceased’s family.
“After consultations with the family, Ministry of Defence, and other stakeholders, we have made a slight amendment to Hon. Sarah’s sendoff program. The funeral service, which was earlier scheduled for 3pm in Nsangi tomorrow, has been moved to the Parliament parking lot at 2pm.”she clarified on Sunday
She further extended her condolences on behalf of all Members of Parliament and the institution, stating, “God gave us Sarah and He has taken her. I encourage the family to be strong and keep praying.
Speaker Among explained that Parliament take care of burial expenses.
“As Parliament, we will take care of everything until our sister, friend, and mother is given a dignified sendoff.” she said
President Museveni first appointed her as Deputy Minister for children and youth affairs, then prior to her transfer to the Defence docket.
Hon. Sarah Mateke’s passing has deeply affected the Parliament and her constituents in Kisoro, where she served with great commitment. Leaders from various sectors of government are expected to attend the proceedings to bid farewell to a dedicated public servant.
