Parliament Demands Justice For Protester Killed By Speeding Govt Car

The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anitah Among has led Parliament in condemning the tragic death of Magezi Tumuhaise, 25, in a fatal car accident during protests over road conditions in Kagadi District.

Tumuhaise, a resident of Rwenzori Cell, Kayanja Parish, Mayirirwe Subcounty, lost his life as demonstrators voiced grievances about the poor state of the Muhorro-Ndaiga road.

During her address at the plenary sitting, Speaker Among expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability. She decried the brutality inflicted upon Ugandans demanding better service delivery and rights, urging security officers to apprehend those responsible for Tumuhaise’s death.

“This afternoon, I was actually on social media much as I don’t believe so much on social media because they only want to destroy people, but I was watching and I saw what happened in Kagadi, how a Government car ran over a person, people who were demonstrating over the bad roads and the driver of the LCV couldn’t afford to respect these people who had a peaceful demonstration, and I don’t know if that person is even alive. It is so unfortunate, that kind of impunity shouldn’t continue in this country because an accident is something we can avoid,” said Among

She further argued MPs of Kagadi, to furnish Parliament with a comprehensive report on the situation.

“I want to call upon the law enforcers to make sure that these people are brought to book and the MPs of Kagadi, we want you to give us a report on what is happening on that. As Parliament, we want to convey our condolences on the innocent soul that was killed brutally just because they are demanding for their right and somebody just comes in and drives over a person, that is terrible. That is somebody’s child, somebody’s husband, somebody’s brother,” she said

Mbabazi Kyomuhendo (District Woman Representative for Kagadi District revealed to that the house that the deceased Tuhaise left behind 4 children and a pregnant wife.

“This person left a family of 4children and a pregnant wife, it was so sad that there was a demonstration on the state of the road that we have been crying for in this Parliament. I once almost died on the same road in 2020, and it is so sad. I haven’t got all the details but the details I have is that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested.” she stated

The protest, which originated from dissatisfaction with road conditions affecting locals in Muhoro, Bwikara, and nearby areas, took a tragic turn when a government vehicle, reportedly driven by Stephen Tibihikira, collided with Tumuhaise at high speed.

Tibihikira, a driver for Kagadi local government, has since been detained by Kagadi police in connection with the fatal accident, as confirmed by Albertine regional police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza.

Speaker Among’s impassioned plea for justice echoed throughout Parliament, as lawmakers demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tumuhaise’s death.
